Transfer failed 550 Failed to open file

Hi,

I am trying to download some files off a localy hosted webserver but I am having a problem, although a lot of the files are downloading correctly, some just won't come down and get stuck in the tranfer que and just keep retrying without ever succeeding.

I have downloaded the latest version and the error log is as below

why do some files download and others get stuck

thanks

Matt

It's a problem on the server side:
[20:50:54] RETR 1891008_questionaire.jpg
[20:50:54] 550 Failed to open file.

Please contact your web hosting provider for assistance.

Regards,
Mat

unfortunately I am the host as it is a local computer running LAMP.

I had come to the conclusion that it was possibly something to do with the server, but was a bit stumped by why some files worked and some didn't

any areas I should start looking to get it resolved?

Cheers J

Maybe the files you are trying to download are currently in use and therefore the server cannot open them. And did you check the access permissions of these files? e.g. Is the user under which the server is running able to access the files?

Mat

I had exactly the same problem yesterday (10th May 2009).

Repeated error 550 - The system cannot find the file specified.

I was trying to upload an MP3 file (a sermon from our Church) - which I do once a week, with no problems usually.
The file size was 9 Mb.
The transfer kept failing, at random places - 3 Mb, 2 Mb, 6 Mb ......
I left SmartFTP running, and eventually - after about a dozen attempts - it finally got through the complete file without the error occurring.

I wonder whether other users of the same web host had similar problems?
My 50 Mb of free webspace belongs to Pipex.

On the same day, my Googlemail account kept dropping out.
So perhaps Pipex was having a bad day, with a lot of short service interruptions?

Next time it happens (if it does recur) I'll probably just leave SmartFTP retrying for as long as it takes to succeed.

I'm having the same problem. Smart was working wonderfully then suddenly it started to give me this The system cannot find the file, then restarts trying to upload it to the site. It does appear to happen on a file size larger than 2.5mb... My other WinSCP program does it just fine for me. It's only for one of the Site's I have this problem with using Smartftp, so i'm gathering its something in my settings for this particular Favourite. Any obvious things I may of changed unknowingly anyone?

Please double click the file in the transfer queue after the retry. The log window opens. Cop&paste the log here.

Regards,
Mat

Sorry, I didn't save the log file at the time, so I can't give you the required details.

Since then, however, upload seems to have been more reliable.

If it occurs again, I'll remember to save the log file and post it here.

OK, the error has occurred again, and here is the log file.

Any ideas why it keeps having to re-start the transfer?

IF it's due to my Pipex connection (over a BT line) intermittently dropping out -
would I be better off switching to a Virgin connection over my cable line?

Chris: Please install the latest version of SmartFTP: https://www.smartftp.com/download

Then post the log from the transfer (from the transfer queue) and not from the remote browser.

I'm not sure how to post the log from the transfer (from the transfer queue).

I've found a file called Transfer Queue.xml

This is what it ways when opened in Notepad:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!--TransferQueueItems-->
<Items><Version>1</Version></Items>

I can't find a way to insert the .xml file, and I can't find out how ti view the "log" from the transfer queue.

Sorry to be so ignorant, but could you assist me in finding the info you wish sent?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link to the relevant Knowledge Base article. I'd tried to find this, but failed.

Here (I hope)is the Transfer Log of another upload I just made.

The first error 550, at the start of the transfer (15:26), does not appear in the log view in the remote browser.

After three minutes of uploading, the second error 550 appears in the log and in the log view window.

This time, after one re-start fromt he beginning, the upload worked.

It frequently takes two or three restarts before an upload finishes.

I'm uploading MP3 audio files (of sermons in our Church), typically 10 or 12 Mb in length.

I hope this info helps to pinpoint the problem.

Thanks!
