MODE Z / zlib

Purpose

On-the-fly compression.

Benefit

Mode Z compression compresses files as they are transferred between the local and remote computers, saving bandwidth and improving transfer time.

Webmasters and server administrators may see an increase in productivity. HTML files, scripts, and large text log files no longer need to be compressed before being transferred and may experience a three- to fourfold improvement in transfer time.

For example, a 60 MB log file can result in only 5 MB of data being exchanged when transferred with MODE Z enabled. Results depend on the file content. Typical compressed sizes are:

  • Text files: approximately 15–20% of the original size
  • HTML files: approximately 25–30% of the original size
  • Media, video, and sound files: approximately 90–95% of the original size

Note: Files already compressed with formats such as ZIP, RAR, or ACE will not see a noticeable gain.

How To

  1. Select the Tools tab
  2. Click on Favorite Properties
  3. Go to Transfer - Compression
  4. Configure the Mode Z settings
