Cannot upload or download

I manage two websites. I am able to both upload and download from one and not the other.

When attempting to upload to http://www.another-choice.net no mater what the file size I attempt to upload the process stops at 8K an I get a server timed out message. I've called customer support at my DNS/site host and they cannot replicate the problem. They have both uploaded and downloaded to the site.

When uploading/downloading to http://www.pccsc.net I have no problems.

please help.
mitch

please specify the method you use for up- / downloads: direct, global queue or session queue. global queue usually is the best choice.

Was using direct. Tried Global queue with no results.
mitch

what do you mean by "no results"? didn't you get the download via global queue working or did the same error occur as via direct download?

Sorry for being vague.

Still not able to upload. File went nearly instantly to 8K then stopped. After time-out next file in queue went to 8K then stopped uploading. I let it cycle throug 4 of the 8 files I'm trying to upload and got the same results each time. 8K seems to be a magic stopping point.

Just disconnected and reconnected now seeing "425 Can't build data connection: Cannot assign requested address." Firewall issue?

update: the 425 error went away with another re-connect.

mitch

yeah, could be a firewall issue. but probably on the server side, as you say it works for you with other servers. anyways, if you have a firewall running, you man try to shut it down completely and see if the upload still fails.

Yeah. Tried that already and still no luck getting files through. Really think this is server-side, but I'm trying all possible avenues while I wait for their reply.

thanks for your help,
mitch

meanwhile, you could post the connection log here so we can take a look at it. maybe it'll let us figure out what's wrong.

Hello ...

As you can see from the log. It still uses PORT mode. Please make sure you have changed the setting in both, the global and the favorite item settings.

-Mat

I'm not using favorites. New log beolw. It is automatically going to PORT mode when I do a direct upload.

Hello ...

It seems to work with PASV for the first few transfers. Then it switches to PORT mode for some unknown reasons.

I would recommend you to use the "Global Queue" for all transfers. The howto can be found at
https://www.smartftp.com/support/howto

The advantage of the global queue is that it will automatcailly reconnect and resume your transfers.

Regards
SmartFTP.com

It looks that way by reading the log, but in fact nothing is uploading--other than a file name. All that happens is that I get to 8K point during the file transfer and the server times out. After I refresh the page I have a file with a name and 0K size. It doesn't matter whether I do a global queue or direct upload, the result is the same; no uploaded files.

mitch

The problem is odd as directory listings are working but file transfer aren't. It may be related to a router or (software) firewall issue.

The article at the link below contains information related to your problem:
https://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/58

You may try to disable/uninstall your software firewall.

-Mat

Thanks. I've already tried disabling my firewall and had the same results. I'm very much inclined to believe that the problem lies in the router or, more likely with the server. I have not explored the router side of things yet and still have outstanding trouble calls with my host. I'm convinced that the problem is not with SmartFTP as I have tried to FTP from a command prompt and still met with the same results (and I can use SmartFTP to upload to another website).

Thanks for your time and patience.

Bon appetit!
mitch

What software firewall are you using?

Sometimes its necessary to update to the latest build or to completly uninstall it.

-Mat

I'm using MicroSoft's firewall (I can feel your eyes rolling from here). I'll try uninstalling etc, but I'm not confident that it will have any effect as I'm able to upload etc. to another site. Both sites are hosted by the same company but are on different servers. The one I'm having problems with runs WUFTP--is there a potential problem there?

Will uninstal/reinstal firewall and report results.

thanks again,
mitch

No luck with that either.

Hello ...

The XP firewall works flawless with SmartFTP. I personally use it as well. IMHO Microsoft did an execllent job :-)

We dont know of any problems related to WUFTPd and SmartFTP.

-Mat

Thanks for all of your help. From SmartFTP's perspective pls consider this issue closed. My site host is going to move me to a different server--hopefully that'll help.

best,
mitch

Servers were switched to a newer version of FTP and I have had no problems since the change was made. Of course the host company will not admit that the problem was with their server or the version of FTP they were using, but the co-incidences make one wonder.

Thanks again for the help.
