Endless "searching for Conflicting files" box

When I drop files for upload, the "Searching for existing files and folders to find possible conflicts" message runs without end. I have left it for up to 15 minutes with no change. What can I try to resolve this problem. The first couple files I uploaded worked, then I deleted them on the host cpanel and tried to re-upload with this problem occurring continuously now for two days. Help!
