HI,
I have SmartFTP v. 3.0.1023.4 and when I ask it to download a large file it will download about 10 megs then freeze for a while then download a little more than freeze for a while so on and so firth until the file completes. The files seem to be fine when they are downloaded but all the starting and stopping really makes the download time jump way up say from 3 minutes to 10. My server shows the connection as stable but when there is a freeze in smartftp the server shows the connections as idle. I have not noticed anyhting out of the ordinary in the smart ftp logs but here they are in case it helps.

I don't know where the timeout comes from. Do you get the timeouts with another FTP client as well? Make sure that you are also downloading with TLS/SSL enabled.

Thanks for the reply,
I have tested the server with CuteFTP and have no issues downloading. As far as setting the transfer to go through using TLS/SSL I am not sure where that setting is. DO you mean on the Client or the server? I am going to test the beta copy now to see if that does the trick.

Two things I notice from the log:
1. In (1) the file exists in (2) it suddenly doesn't exist anymore? Looks like a bug on the server to me.
2. SmartFTP does not send a ABOR command so the error message from the server is probably incorrect. But there must be a reason why the server disconnects the data connection. You should be able to find a detailed SSL/TLS error message in the server log.

By default most other FTP clients do not use SSL/TLS for data connections even if you have an encrypted data connection. So it's important that you make sure that you test under the same conditions.

Also are you running the latest version of Serv-U?

Hi Thanks for your continues help on this issue. I have checked the server log and see pretty much the same errors as I do in the smartFTP logs. There don't appear to be any SSl errors that I can see and I have the server recording all errors except ODBC. For good measure here is the log. Also I have contacted the manufacturer of the server software but they have not gotten back to me yet. Lastly is there any way this could be a problem related to using MLST as opposed to the older LIST command?? Thanks!

Do you have keep alive enabled during the transfer? If yes you should disable this option.
1. Go to the Favorite Properties.
2. Then go to the FTP->Transfer dialog
3. Disable the [x] Send NOOP commands during transfer
