I left for a month then came back to update my webfiles and find I cannot upload from my usual SmartFTP altho I'm using the same settings as before. SmartFTP worked fine for years but maybe has become overly complex for me. My computer is a P.4 3.00 GHz, with 1 gig ram, running Win XP Service Pack 2, everything updated as far as I know.
I tried to update the web files like I've done a hundred times, but for a week now I am getting 550 Permission Denied. I was using the free version of SmartFTP so I purchased the key and updated to the latest version. No change.
I contacted the web host and they had no problem uploading at their end. I downloaded and installed a competing FTP program (which shall remain nameless for the nonce...) and I had no problem at all updating my files using it. Worked the first time using the same settings. I went back to SmartFTP and tried again and got the same 550 Permission Denied.
Then I went into the settings and changed Passive Mode to Active Mode. That made no difference either. I've looked at the transfer files and can't make anything happen there either. I read quite a number of upload issues posted here but the solutions don't seem to work.

I'm pretty sure that I have verified that it is not a password issue or anything wrong at the host server's end, tho I did have an issue once with them when the index file got stuck and their "back office" had to delete it before I could update it. That doesn't seem to be the case this time.
I also recently had a Trojan virus and some Malware slip thru. but Anti-Malware seems to have cleaned that up as I've seen no trace of it since when I use IE. My antivirus/anti-evilware program is Norton 360 V.2.
Also I recently started using Firefox instead of IE, so the files that I am trying to upload are now Firefox files.
Any ideas? I'm used to SmartFTP and want to continue with it. Thanks in advance.
