Problems Uploading from Vista

Hi,
I am having real problems with ftp from Windows Vista (i used smartFTP on XP for ages but the new computer came with vista.) my main problem is that my ftp connection is really intermittent.

even just navigating around a remote site can cause the connection to hang or disconnect. I have tried everything switching from Passive to active modes, allowing software and ports on my firewall, turning the firewall off completly, upgraded to the very latest version as suggested to other people and nothing seems to improve the situation. When I can get it to work uploading even small files can take stupidly long (I left a 700kb file uploading overnight and it has managed to upload 100kb by this morning).

I dont know if this is a smartFTP thing or a vista thing but its really annoying, anyone got any ideas??
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello ...

Your data connection seems to time out. Doesn't SmartFTP automatically resume the broken transfer? Please wait 30 seconds and then send the log from the Transfer Queue again. You should see the 2nd attempt which resumes the previous transfer if the server supports this feature.

I seem to get a different error everytime its vert erratic so quite difficult to reproduce the same results each time.

Hello ..

The server doesn't allow you to resume the file. This is the default setting of proftpd. Proftpd is the FTP server software that is running on the server. It's the proftpd's developers way to make uploading files as inefficient as possible. In conclusion every time your transfer fails the FTP client has to restart it from 0.

The problem with SmartFTP is that it doesn't detect the situation correctly and instead of retrying the file from 0 it tries to resume the file over and over.

We are implementing a workaround which should at least retry the file. However we cannot fix the problem with the server. If the connection breaks the transfer needs to be restarted again.

So would that cause the transfers to be so painfully slow as well or is that going to be a connection setting?

I don't know why your transfer is so slow. Do you have the same problem with other FTP servers as well? If yes then the problem is very likely with your connection. If it is only this particular server then the problem is on the server side.

The Transfer Queue will not restart your transfer from 0 if it detects the "append/restart not permitted" error from the server.
