Ascii mode not selected any moe

I have been using SmartFTP v1.0 for private use for several years and as I now wish to use it for business use I have bought a license and installed v2.5

It seems that, whereas v1.0 correctly identifies htm files as ASCII and uploades them in ASCII mode, v2.5 uploads them as Binary. I have loooked through the online help and I have found the Favorites File List but surely I don't have to enter all ascii file types myself, separately for each ftp site I use ?

I also notice several comments in the help, which suggest that I should not use Ascii mode - how else can I upload text/htm files from a Windows PC to a Linux server ?

I expect I'm missing something, because I can't believe that such a fundamental feature has been broken !

Thanks

Hello ..

As you correctly noticed transferring files in ASCII is not recommended. To edit your files on Windows use an editor with unix line ending support (Almost all of them beside Notepad do). Then transfer your file in binary mode.
For a list of free text editors

ASCII mode is a thing of the past where the only text editor available was notepad ;-)

Hello ...

Just add the extensions of the files you want to upload in ascii mode to the ascii list.
Or you can get the two dos2unix and unix2dos tools from:

Hello ...

No you don't have to delete the favorites. It's enough if you tell your favorite to use the default favorite settings.

Hmmm - did that and they didn't seem to pick up the new file lists (at least it still uploaded in binary.)

Anyway, I've done it now.

Thanks anyway )

I disagree. Perl script files (*.pl) are but one type that MUST be uploaded in ASCII.

That's the reason that *.pl is in the ASCII list by default.
But if you use an editor which understand unix line endings you will have no problems with binary mode as well.

Hello
Unfortunately I have to disagree with you. You can easily test it by yourself
1. Get Ultraedit from http://www.ultraedit.com
2. Write some perl code.
3. In Ultraedit go to the menu File -> Conversations -> DOS to Unix
4. Save the file
5. Upload the .pl file in binary mode

The ASCII mode doesn't do anything else but what it's done in Step 3 above.

Hi
Just thought I'd add that we also need Ascii mode transfers, as we need to be able to send the same files to both Unix and Windows-based servers, and also to be able to edit/manipulate and test them under a Windows environment.
We don't want to have to remember to convert the files before uploading as that's a recipe fro disaster when someone forgets or converts the wrong files.

Hello ...

ASCII transfers are and were always supported. Add the file extension to the ASCII list in the favorite's settings.
