This has little or nothing to do with the FTP protocol. The client is requesting the files using the HTTP GET command. The proxy server (acts as an FTP client) then connects to the FTP server. It's not possible to send a single FTP command through this tunnel. Therefore it will only work with simple FTP servers. PASV support on the server side is mandatory. Secure connections with AUTH SSL/TLS are not possible as well. I also think that users which such a limited Internet connection are an exception these days.

We only have limited direct connection and we use proxy server (fedora with web min squid).

I was able to connect due to the proxy.

me with smartftp can't connect to ftp with squid proxy, i put http proxy and don't work:

[Whats a proxy and whats a http lol i'm new at this ..can you imagine what i'm going threw. just download one of the other ftp's theres about a dozen to chose from,one of them has to work on that proxy http thing.It all looks greek to me lol.
