Annoying issues with SmartFTP 1.5 Build 988

Hi,

We have been using SmartFTP for a number of years in the office with a multiple system licence and not had any problems until recently when I wanted to upgrade to the recent release (v1.5.988). Although the product installed without issue, upgrading the original release, I am experiencing a whole range of extremely annoying problems with this release.

I have also installed this new release on a 2003 server the other day and I am also experiencing the same issues so this is certainly not limited to our network here. I have used previous versions of SmartFTP on 2003 and 2000 server without issue.

The problems I am experiencing are as follows:

1) Unreliable file transfers, uploading files to overwrite an existing number of files, although I am asked to overwrite it says "Transfer Complete", then directly underneath "Transfer Failed". Looking at the files I had chosen to upload only a small number would have been uploaded. If I then delete the files on the remote FTP location and attempt to upload again I am asked to overwrite the files, even though they no longer exist. I could understand this might be a problem with the caching, but if I close SmartFTP and reload (the cache is set to be cleared when the app is closed), it still says the files exist and they are not uploaded correctly or at all. We are using a number of FTP server applications, mainly IIS6 FTP, but also proFTPd (Linux).

2) There appears to be some odd issue when attempting to upload files to a new FTP location. If the file doesn't exist I am presented with the following error when uploading

    SIZE buildingblocks_programmedistribution.htm

550 buildingblocks_programmedistribution.htm: The system cannot find the file specified.

    PASV

The file appears to upload correctly (as a version never existed in the destination folder in this scenario).

3) When opening a new FTP connection, the remote FTP window now comes below the Local Browser. The original FTP versions have always displayed the remote FTP window above the Local Browser. Dragging files "up" to the above window suggests "uploading". As this has changed without notice, its slightly confusing for some of the users here and unfortunately some files have been accidentaly downloaded from the remote FTP location and overwritten our local versions! I have checked the window arrangement and there is no preference to change the window order. What was the reason for changing the order?

--

I paid for the upgrade to trial the new version of this software and at the same time also upgraded all the other workstations in the office. I am apprehensive about spending any money upgrading our licence for some software that doesn't work correctly.

Any ideas if there are any bug fixes for the above issues? In response to the above problems I have gone through the Tools > Settings and checked and double checked all settings, turning off new features such as the XCRC checking etc, to no avail. Even though the feature is apparently turned off it still attempts to perform file size comparisons.

Thanx for your replies. Richard[/code]

Hello ...

>1
Please support your claim with logs and instructions how to reproduce it. We are not aware of such a problem in the latest version.

>2
The SIZE command is being used to detect whether a file already exists on the server. If the file doesn't exist you will see the message you posted. This is not an error and you can ignore it. The SIZE check is better than relying on the cache.

>3
Move the localbrowser below the remote view then go to menu: Windows->Tile Horizontally. If you automatically open the localbrowser with the favorite, the localbrowser appears under the remote view. If you do not like the automatic arrangement of the windows disable it in menu: Windows->Auto Arrange.

I am having a very similar problem in that I have been using SmartFTP for many years without difficulty, and only now after upgrading to 988, have trouble successfully connecting to some sites, or uploading files. What has changed?

And some logs for connecting to one site... if you see, the first time I connect I get a directory listing, and I try to upload a file - the file does not complete uploading, gets truncated, and the connection quits. The second time I try to connect a minute later, I cannot even get a directory listing before getting booted.

Hey thanks for the idea, but my connection timeout is set to 30 s and all entries in my favorites are setup to use the global default. I have changed no settings since the upgrade from 985.

Did the new build change or add any settings that might be causing this problem? I am experiencing it with more than one of the sites on my favorites.

Why are the developers seeing all these errors that we are all seeing? Their must be a least a dozen threads on this same topic.

I meant to say why are they NOT seeing the errors we are?

I know I sometimes I do not get these errors when uploading to different servers for different clients. It is weird.

I don't know why they are unable to replicate the issue tbh, but I did try the BETA download that "mb" offered in response to my first post and that seems to have fixed the problem with files not being uploaded properly or at all. It still shows the SIZE file not found error, which although is cosmetic, it does fly by in red so I have to then check the log to ensure something hasn't gone wrong.

There's obviously multiple problems with the latest release. I run smartftp on multiple machines and get the same issues no matter what. The most recent annoyance is when I edit remote files and smartftp deletes the local cache copy and says no file exists. Then I go to edit the remote file again and smartftp successfully overwrites the file it just truncated to zero length.

Please read how to make bug reports (README of this forum). Thank you.
