Unfortunately I cannot see anything wrong with the display settings.

Did you try to delete the SmartFTP registry key to fix the problem?

Before you do it, please export the SmartFTP registry key.

BTW: What build are you running?

Back again, I did delete the reg key of Smart FTP and now it works......I did do a total back up of the entire SmartFTP reg keys if you would like a copy of it let me know and i will email it to you.

Now it's kinda impossible to figure out what exactly caused the the error.

Would you mind to send the registry export by email to bugreport at smartftp.com

I will try to reproduce the problem with the old .15 build and your registry file.

i'm freezing too, man is it time to dump SmartFTP? Seems maybe a WinXP-SP2 issue with the program? It just goes from working to not....

Deleting the Display registry seems to be a BS work around and not a true fix.

We have numerous test systems/installations and we cannot reproduce the problem on any of them. The problem does only occur if you have the 1.0.982.15 build installed and only on a small percentage of installation/systems.
It has nothing to do with WinXP SP2 though.

If anyone can send us a reproducable case. e.g. what registry settings exactly causes the problem, it would be much easier for us to locate the problem. My assumption is that it may have something to do with the "Log Font" setting. But other settings under the Display subkey may be the cause as well.

What do I need to do to fix it?

I've deleted the registry key for 'display' and it still hangs.
I've also tried switching to 'active mode' (port) in the connection settings as someone else suggested.

btw I don't have sp2.

There's mine. I get this with the latest official build (982), and the newest developer build (983). No idea what triggered it either. It was working, and then it just stopped - full CPU utilization, and the memory usage of the process just kept increasing - it used all of the 700MB I had free (out of 1GB), and then started going into virtual memory before I terminated the process.
This is on WinXP Pro, SP1a, with all updates (except SP2 of course) installed.

Murphy: Does deleting the display registry key solve the problem for your?

I dont think it has anything to do with user privileges. Its more likely that the registry settings are not the same for both users.

I did just delete the entire registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSmartFTP

Now it is working. I'll see what happens when I close the program and restart it - right after I finish transferring some files.

in order to fix this i need to delete the entire folder at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSmartFTP

or do i just delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSmartFTPdisplay folder

or something entirely different?

This has been a recurring problem since upgrading to SmartFTP. 1.0.982. Until this version, I have never had a problem with any other SmartFTP version. Reverting to the previous version corrects the problem. But then the nag update screens become annoying...

I have been successfully using SmartFTP version 1.0.982 for about a week after I got it running finally after lots of fuss, uninstalls, reinstalls, reversions, etc. the last time. Now after a week of flawless use, I am back to square one with this SmartFTP connection issue again...

There definitely has been a bug introduced in this latest version. When the SmartFTP connection fails, the system resources quickly become depleted. It appears to be in an infinite loop where objects are being created but not deleted. Closing the task in Task Manager recovers most of the lost resources though. There's no other way to close SmartFTP after the Connection attempt freezes...

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, I am a programmer and this system is full of debugging tools. Not sure what caused this, but I was playing around with debugging the process while it was hangning and I got the program to finally stop hanging and it popped me back a blank message box with a simple OK button. I clicked that and the program went back to normal. It may have been the amount of time I let it sit, or it may have had to do with the debugger. O well....sorry I don't have time to step through it, but I am off to work. Later and I hope this helps.

No, it doesn't. SmartFTP uses 100% of the available CPU-power and generates a swap file with about 790MB.

Both problems are not related. To fix the favorites problem. Close SmartFTPand delete the favorites.dat. The favorites.dat probably got corrupted while downgrading to an older build.

We will recommend to delete the "Connection Data" in the future.

I have been fighting with this for almost 3 days now I still have problems but this is what I have come up with.

1. The program when it installs it works well.
2. When I reset the computer or turn off is when the problem starts.
3. I have disabled the firewall and this does not fix it.

I ran it after restarting the computer then I ran adaware, there is no spyware on the smartftp but I notice it lets you select the MRU List in the negligible objects, and then when I select this and delete it then this is where the problem of hanging on comes, let me know if this is it, thanks,

When I restarted and the smartftp hang up then I forced it to close, then I went into the regedit and deleted the Connection Data folder in the registry and then it worked I think it has something to do with this, thanks,

Thanks Mat. As you suggested, deleting the favorites.dat did correct my Menu bug. I haven't had a connection freeze in two days now either, so hopefully it will last a while this time...

I had to delete the entire reg for SmartFTP, the display folder didn't do it.

I have taken a snapshot of SmartFTP in its working state, we'll see what changes in the registry when it isn't working...

Nope, I'm running W2K SP3. I don't think this problem is related to the version of the OS or the service pack installed...

Since I last deleted the Connection Data folder registry entry, I haven't had any additional problems with SmartFTP, knock on wood. I hope it stays this way for a while. But if it doesn't, it isn't a big deal deleting the Connection Data folder registry entry since it doesn't adversely affect any SmartFTP settings. It takes less than a minute to "fix" the connection problem once you know what to do...

The display folder registry entry has nothing to do with this bug. So it's not surprising that it didn't help you in any way. Delete the Connection Data folder registry entry next time and see what happens. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in the outcome...

As a programmer myself, I am well aware of how difficult it is to correct a problem that you can't recreate. Now that we are able to narrow down the root of the problem to the Connection Data folder registry entry, perhaps the developers will be better able to pin-point and correct this new and annoying bug real soon...

SmartFTP has always been a great tool with very few serious bugs along the way. Their track record is amazing. It's a shame that this bug reared it's ugly head now, but it's not surprising that a bug can be inadvertently introduced into the code from time to time. We are very fortunate that the SmartFTP developers have been able to maintain the highest standards for all these years and I have no doubt that they will soon track down and correct this latest problem. It's only a matter of time...

Great news Mat. I downloaded the developer's build right after you suggested it the other day. But I haven't had any problems with 1.0.982 since I deleted the Connection Data folder, so I haven't bothered installing the new build yet. As a programmer, I'm curious of what caused this latest problem. Can you give us any kind of a hint what you had to do to fix this bug???

SmartFTP saves the state of the remoteview data into the "Connection Data" registry branch. The state holds information for the windows position, size, the vertical/horizontal splitter positions etc. For some reason the data it saved/loaded got corrupted. Passing this corrupted data to Kernel32/GDI32 function caused SmartFTP or in this caused the windows API functions to consume lots of cpu and memory resources.

The fix does now verify the data before it's being used. Furthermore with the latest developer build, the existing Connection Data has marked as invalid and isn't used. The data is overwritten by "good" data once you close a remote view.

Delete it and I bet your connection problem goes away. I think mine was empty too when I deleted it. But it sure solved the Connection freezing problem without requiring the settings to be re-entered...

It sounds like Mat and the other developers may have to do some more searching on the code to find this elusive and intermittent bug...

Thanks due to the great offer from eyebex to run a debug sessoin, I was able to locate the nasty bug. It has been fixed it in the latest developer build 1.0.983.10. This will also be the official 1.0.983 build.

I am not a programmer, but I uninstalled SmartFTP and reinstall the dev build from the link above and the program is still freezing for me.
