FTP error

Every time i try to log on to any server to get access (tried with different details) i get the message

"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond."

My server says it's not them and when i try to ftp from cmd line i get nothing does any one have any ideas.

Your problem is very likely with a software firewall or antivirus software.

Have shutdown all firewall and anti virus software. any other ideas?

Running windows XP ( fully patched SP2 ) Home edition.

The exceptions list does contain SmartFTP so I guess it should work.

If I shut down the firewall it works but should I have to shut down the firewall to get it to work ?

I run Avast av software ( again fully patched )

I searched the KB but still no go.

any one have any ideas ?
