win xp can't log into mac osx

I am trying to SmartFTP to my Mac and the connection is being timed out and closed by the client. It logs in fine and Darwin welcomes me. Then SmartFTP enters passive mode and it tries to reconnect to the same ip address again but on a different port, and finally it times out. I can FTP to my Mac using the the DOS client that comes with win XP. Can someone help me troubleshoot?

AFAIK the command line client uses active mode by default, and so should you when using SmartFTP.
