Failure to download a hidden file - is there a trick?

I am trying to download a file with a known name from a 'blind' FTP site, so no DIR listing is allowed, for example. I assume that the 'Download Hidden File' command is designed for this situation, but when I try it, expecting SmartFTP to do a RETR command, it starts off with a SIZE command. The FTP server says 'Permission Denied' for this, and SmartFTP stops at this point, and does not attempt to download the file. I have turned on the 'Continue On Error' option, but it's having no effect in this instance.
