Can't connect to freeuk's FTP servers - any suggestions?

Hi,

I've been trying to connect to the servers of a UK ISP over the past few days (in order to update a friend's web site) but am failing miserably....

I have the details entered into the relevant boxes at the top of the SmartFTP screen, and when I hit return I only see the following in the Remote window 'Log' pane:

Resolving host name home.freeuk.com...
Connecting to (home.freeuk.com) -> IP: 212.126.144.55 PORT: 21
Connected to (home.freeuk.com) -> Time = 125ms
Socket connected waiting for login sequence.
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...

This repeats, until the maximum retries is exceeded.

I can connect to other FTP site without difficulty, but this one seems to not want to accept a connection - I've also tried with CuteFTP Pro v6.0, and get the following log:

*** CuteFTP 6.0 - build May 24 2004 ***

STATUS:> [27/09/2004 17:54:31] Getting listing "/"...

ERROR:> [27/09/2004 17:54:31] Control connection closed.

Disappointingly, there are no convenient error numbers to look up...
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

Server issue, maibe the ftp is down.

Hi, Aokromes.

From which bit of the log did you deduce that it was a server issue?
Sorry to appear thick ;-)

I have tryed to connect and i got the same error. And because you have tryed with more than 1 client.

Aah. OK.

What's confusing me though is that it initially makes a connection to the IP address, and a socket, but then closes it.... with no reason given
