Several questions concerning SSL

I'm using Smartftp 1.0.981 together with several Netware Servers (ver. 5.1 , 6 , 6.5). The Servers are configured to accept only SSL-FTP connections.
Configuring Smartftp with TLS, clear data connection, passive mode and explicit ssl the FTP-connections work fine. Using private data connection the connection to the server often gets time out and the files aren't transmitted completely. In the log-files I can see that Prot P is being used for connection.

I have the following questions:

Using explicit SSL and clear data connection, is the whole transmission being encrypted or only login and password information ? I've read that clear data connection means non-ssl transmission but my servers are accepting this.

I've read that Prot C works faster than Prot P. How Can I change it ? Can I configure this in Smartftp or is it a configuration option of the server ? I'm sorry, but I don't know what the command Prot means and how it works.

Thanks,
