"error unknown" AND "connection closed"

Help, please :?

I installed SmartFTP 1.0.981.37 and cannot connect.

- I have entered an FTP server address, my username and password, and the program recognizes them as valid.
- Port setting is 21.
- "Passive" and "Auto".
- Configured for 5 tries to connect, and 90 per try.
- Other settings are default.

I get the following final message:

" 331 User name okay, need password.
PASS (hidden)
Unknown error.
Cannot login waiting to retry (20s)...
Connection closed "

I have searched the Knowledge Database, no answers.....

I'm having almost the exact same problems. I just downloaded the newest smartFTP software and I haven't been able to connect to my ftp yet!

Is there an administrator who can help the three of us with whatever basic settings that we need to adjust? Does SmartFTP automatically detect for internet settings or do we have to set it up? Do we have to have a default email and other settings adjusted before it'll connect to whatever site we're trying to get to?

I've tried putting in the ftp site as a url and as a plain ol ftp. Both times, with the login info and without, it doesn't connect to anything. Please assist! Thanks.

Try to connect to: ftp://ftp.smartftp.com if it works the reason of the failure can be:

Bad ftp adress (dns or port)
Firewall denies the connection to that ip/port.
Ftp server Down.

If it don't works the reason of the failure can be:

Firewall denies the connection to SmartFTP/ftp ports.
