new and need help

ok I can't get anything to upload ... I have never done anything like this so I dont know what I'm doing wrong.. I start and log on and everything is good but how do I get my home page to upload ?
I just need to see how it works so I can do more in the next few days ...
Like what type of file does my home page need to be?
