A Newbies Question

Firstly, my apologies to all those familiar with ftp if this is a very, very basic question.

A friend and I wish to transfer files between our two PCs. We are both on broadband, me in the UK and he in Australia. We are both using Sygate Personal Firewall Pro.

Someone suggested looking at SmartFTP. so I have been browsing the tutorials to see if it's what we need but they all talk about connecting to the ftp:smartftp.com server.

Is there a way to use SmartFTP to connect our two PCs without going through the smartftp server?

Is there an idiots guide as to how we can transfer files between us??

One of the two must run a FTP server, for example http://www.g6ftpserver.com the owner of the server must allow to the firewall access from internet to the server make an acount and tell the data to the other person. Also if both runs a FTP server don't it's a more easy way of send the files ussing SmartFTP to the other without wait to the other person.
