FTP Server Ready, SmartFTP Is Not

Win XP, firewall software disabled.

Just downloaded and installed latest version of SFTP. When I try to connect with my ftp server, it responds with a packet that contains
"220 FTP Server ready."

However, SFTP says
"Connection timeout. No response from server."

So, my ftp server gets the call and says it's ready, but SFTP ignores the response and eventually times out. What gives? An FTP client that can't make a simple FTP connection... am I missing something here? Can anyone help, or do I have to buy the program just to get it to work?

SmartFTP works well with a lot of Software firewalls if you read: https://www.smartftp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6897 you can see a list of verified working firewalls. If i don't renember bad there was a issue with a old build of mcafee security package, if you are ussing it try getting a update.
