Unable to Edit Files without Write Access

I am new to SmartFTP coming from CuteFTP and i have trouble saving files when the file permissions are set to 444 which most template files are. I never had trouble with other FTP clients editing files like this but with SmartFTP it seems i have to change the permission first then i can write to it.

Is there any way around this?

Can you please post the transfer log showing the problem?
