Passwords failing on my website

I just started my free trial and I'm running into a problem. I have pages on my site that people have to use user name and password to access. It has always work before but now when I used SmartFTP my customers have no access. I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm using the normal FTP protocol. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I would normally agree but the only thing I changed was I used SmartFTP, the content of my site was exactly the same

maybe you uploaded your password file in binary instead of ascii?
