Can't upload files

Hi

I'm unable to upload any files to my website. I've downloaded Smart FTP version 3.0 and have tried dragging and dropping files from my computer folders to the FTP files and it always looks like it has worked (there is always a record that the site has been updated at the time I did it when I later re-try to upload the file), but when I open the webpage, it remains as it was before I tried making any changes several weeks ago.

From the log it looks like the files have been transferred.

Do you see any items (files/folders) stuck in the Transfer Queue (bottom window)? If not the items have been uploaded successfully. You can also get the log from a transfer if you want to verify that the file actually got transferred. To do this proceed as following:
1. Stop the transfer queue
2. Do the drag&drop operation. In this test drag&drop only one file
3. The file will be added to the transfer queue
4. Double click the first file to get the log window. Leave the window open
5. Start the Transfer Queue
6. The item will be processed and the log you opened in 3 will be filled.

Hi Mat

Although the log says it's transferred, the webpage hasn't updated at all. To be more specific, the main page of the website, www.stephe.co.uk/default.html shows a main picture and then four smaller pictures beneath it (a cardboard box, a scientific chart, a logo reading "Sudden Comfort" and some text saying "The New Socials") each accompanied with some writing.

My updates should mean that the "Sudden Comfort" and "New Socials" images should now be replaced by a picture of a elevator symbol ("elevations.jpg") and a cloud symbol ("sundae-club2.jpg"), accompanied by new text. There are other pages (archive.html and reviews.html which should have been updated but haven't, although the log indicates that they have been.

I tried updating the site well over a week ago and, although the updates are usually instantaneous, left it a while, just in case the upload was taking a particularly long time, but as you can see, although the log indicates the transfer has been successful, in reality, it hasn't.

Please post the log. You can easily check if the changes have been uploaded. After the upload right-click on the file in the Remote Browser and select "View" or "Edit" from the context menu.

Hello ..

This is the log from the Remote Browser. What we are interested in is the log from the Transfer Queue. I've described the steps on how to get it in my previous reply.

If the file is removed from the transfer queue it means that it has successfully been transferred to the server. Are you sure you are uploading it to the correct folder on the server? After the transfer do you see the new file in the server window? When you right-click on this file and select "View" or "Edit" do you see the new content?

Yes. I'm sure that I am uploading into the correct folder. I am moving files from the C Drive on my computer(which appears on the right frame of the screen on the Smart FTP software, to ftp.stephe.co.uk which appears on the left hand side. When checking the "view" and "edit" functions, it shows the changes have been made, but again, when I check the web page itself, the changes have not followed through.

I have checked the site using different browsers to see if this would help but to no avail. No matter what the log says, no matter whether the file is removed from the transfer queue and appears on the "edit" or "view" log, the new content still does not appear on the actual website.

Is there any other way around this problem as at the moment my website is just getting more and more out of date.

You might still be uploading to the wrong folder on the server. e.g. on many setups the root folder of the website on the FTP server is something like /htdocs or /wwwdocs. Please verify the correct location with your web hosting provider.

What root folder do you think I should be using? As far as I'm aware, I'm using the same address, login, password and port number as I always have done. It's just since the software changed that I've been experiencing these problems.
