I appear to connect to the remote browser correctly and ftp.domainname.com appears in the folder window, but no folders appear below it and no files in the file window.
This occurs whatever domain I try.
Please advise.

Hello ..
Try to uncheck the [ ] Show All Files and [ ] Resolve Links options in the FTP -> Transfer dialog of your favorite. If the -al arguments in the LIST -al command still show up you did not correctly change the settings. Then please send the new log.

Folders and files display after unchecking Show all files and Resolve links. To do this I had to change for Default to Favourite settings.
I then unchecked [ ] Show all files and [ ] Resolve links in the default settings and now all addressed display their folders and files.
Is this the correct procedure?

Yes. Now right click on the folder and select "Show Raw Listing" from the context menu. If the listing is empty then the server does not return anything. In this case contact your web hosting provider for assistance.
