FTP Transfer with Vista Ultimate Failing

Been using SmartFTP for a while with XP, very successfully. Now using Vista Ultimate and just can't transfer any files. I've tried changing the Connection Mode from Default, to Active, and Passive, but makes no difference. I've checked Vista Firewall and SmartFTP has full permission. I do have a Linksys Wireless Cable Router (I connect direct through ethernet to cable modem) but never previously had any problems.

Here's the log, marked the offending section in red. It says "550 20070607210736 index.html: No such file or directory", and yet there is that directory on my server. I can edit that file (index.html) on the server within SmartFTP and save it back.

I get:

Any thoughts please anyone?????

Hello ..

You can ignore the error message. Your server doesn't allow you to set the date/time of a remote file.

SmartFTP

Sorry, I can't ignore the error, the error being that I can't transfer (FTP) any files to my server. In other words, SmartFTP ain't doing its bit. Any thoughts please. I love the program, worked great with XP, but in Vista Ultimate it's not playing ball. Would love to get this sorted please.

Hello ..

The log you have posted shows that the file was been uploaded sucessfully. Once again the error you see is no error.

Yeah, fascinating ain't it. As you say, the log say's one thing, but in fact the file does NOT upload. It's very frustrating. Please take me seriously on this one. I'm an IT manager and have been doing this stuff for many years. It aint' working. If I'm doing something darn silly, OK, I'm ready to learn, but I'm not seeing it.

Hello ...
Please provide your license key id (add it to your forum profile) if you want us to look further into this. To purchase a license go to:

I am having the same problem. It APPEARS that the file transfers, but it in fact does not. Under XP I simply drag a file from the local host pane to the remote host pane and the file transfered. I could see the progress in the remote queue and all. Under Vista, if I drag a file, I get a nice file icon with an arrow pointer when I drag, but nothing actually happens even though the log indicates that it was transferred. I can not transfer by selecting a file and then clicking the upload (or download, transfers do not occur in either direction) buttons.

I too thought that SmartFTP was free for non-commercial use and did not realize that we needed to purchase a license key in order to get help in the public forum. I too am an IT director, so it's not just a couple of schlocks having trouble.

Typically 90% of the users seeking support here are having problems to transfer files. Why? Because the main purpose of an FTP client is to transfer files from A to B. As a conclusion not every problem related to file transfers is actually the same problem. Also due to the nature of this forum (technical support for users) you will not find a lot of users reporting that they do not have problems using our product.

skopp13: If you believe there is a problem with SmartFTP please submit a proper bug report (see the Readme in this forum and the Bug Report forum).

Hi - From the admin replies here I'm getting the impression that you don't really want reports here of the product not working in Vista Ultimate. I'd really like to see this working as otherwise it's one of the best around, it just isn't doing what's it meant to. What language can I use here that will engage "support" in trying to get this working, rather than a techy style brush-off. Please, engage, and let's find out what's going on here. I'm sure we're all interested in seeing it work. To recap:

Vista says the file is FTP transferred, but in fact it's not
SmartFTP has permission set in Vista Firewall
Makes no difference if Communication is set to Passive, Active, or Default

Come on techs, engage please, let's find an answer please.

Hi - Come on tech support, I'd love to have this problem fixed. Any thoughts please? Don't just ignore please.

In order to fix a problem you have to describe how to reproduce the problem It's like saying "The door wouldn't open", now people would say back to you: "Have you tried the lock?". Of course, you have tried the lock, therefore give more information then this bug might get fixed

Not to worry - It's like telling someone the door won't open and needs fixing, but the carpenter goes on an on about screw sizes, wood type, and size of the door.

I described he problem very fully above and won't bother anymore. I've used SmartFTP for several years through different versions but my experience here has gonme from a warm glow feeling towards SmartFTP through to a "if they can't be bothered, neither can I".

I've now bought another FTP competing product that does FTP files from home PC to my server using Vista Ultimate. It's lovely when you fire up a package and it works great. It's not lovely when you try to use a product an it doesn't, plus you get very unuseful responses from support.

Sorry, but after five or more years (or so) with SmartFTP, after this weeks experience with "support", it's now deleted and I won't be back.
