Getting Very Slow to Open

I have version 1.0 Build 968 which initially worked fine (mostly, apart from ocassional toobar disappearances) but it is getting slower and slower to open up. Sometimes it takes minutes to open now. Is there a cache or something that can be cleared to speed it up, or am I doomed without upgrading, and will I have the same problem if I do upgrade?
