Error: "550 I can only retrieve regular files" ?

What causes this error? I'm trying to download a .gz file from my host to my PC. The file is 4.3GB and located in root. I have ftp root privileges, so that's not the problem... and I can download other files from root.

The file probably only is a symbolic link to the "real" file.
