I made the post after trying to search for %s. Nothing came out.
Since I was using a 1.5 version I had just installed on top of an ancient 2001 version, I just decided to uninstall the whole thing, clean the registry from any 'smartftp' debris, reboot and try again. The fresh install did the trick.
So I guess the oldest solution in the book for this sort of problem solved the problem. I'm posting this so anyone else having the same problem knows these simple steps will work.
