Upgrading from 2.5.1006.46 to 2.5.1008.19

Post by Cerbera » Thu Nov 29, 2007 9:35 pm

Upgrading SmartFTP is generally a smooth and pleasant experience. However, there are always a few niggly things. So when I upgraded from 2.5.1006.46 to 2.5.1008.19, I decided to document what happened and how I felt about it:
My system information:

Code: Select all

+- System -----------------------------

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

CPU Speed : 1410 MHz

Total Memory : 511 MB

Free Memory : 186 MB

+- SmartFTP ---------------------------

Version : 2.5.1008.19

Time Stamp : 2007-11-28 17:14:31

Platform : x86

+- Application DLL --------------------

sfFTPLib.dll : 1.5.11.14

sfFavorites.dll : 1.0.4.19

sfFavoritesShellExtension.dll : 1.0.1.4

sfTransferQueue.dll : 1.0.1.19

SmartHook.dll : 1.0.2.2

+- Language ---------------------------

SmartFTP.exe : 2.5.1008.19

+- Internet Explorer ------------------

Version : 7.0.5730.11

+- Winsock ----------------------------

Winsock : 2.2
I use the Native Windows theme.

I have notes for many niggly things in 2.5.1006.46. Should I see if they still exist in 2.5.1008.19 or the latest beta before making a new topic about them?

(EDIT) I noted a few bugs separately on my SmartFTP 2.5.1008.19 page, with screenshots.

Would it be more helpful if I made a topic for each distinct bug, or are you happy to work from that web page?

Has much progress been made on this? Should I write an account of upgrading to the newest version?

My SmartFTP version is about to expire. Should I document the experience I have while upgrading? If nothing has been done on this yet, I would prefer to avoid documenting the same problems all over again.

Hello ..

You are welcome to document your new findings. However you can leave out the things you have previously documented.
If you prefer you can also order your points by importance and/or highlight the 3 things you consider the most important.

Mat

Thanks for the prompt response! Those are good ideas.

Here are the main things I noticed when upgrading from SmartFTP 2.5.1008.19 to SmartFTP 2.5.1008.40 just now, ordered by importance:
  1. All my UI preferences seem to have been carried forwards faultlessly. Yay!
  2. Still created a shortcut on my desktop which I didn't ask for or have any way to prevent.
  3. I still have a folder at C:\Program Files\SmartFTP Client 2.5 Setup Files\SmartFTP Client 2.5 Setup Files. No other program seems to require 2 folders in the Program Files area.
  4. Installer still uses an old-fashioned, Windows 95 style icon. I have a SFTPNSI.exe in that folder which has a modern, Windows XP style icon.
In case it helps, here are my system specs (should be same as last time):

Code: Select all

+- System -----------------------------

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

CPU Speed : 1410 MHz

Total Memory : 511 MB

Free Memory : 138 MB

+- SmartFTP ---------------------------

Version : 2.5.1008.40

Time Stamp : 2008-02-13 19:44:35

Platform : x86

+- Application DLL --------------------

sfFTPLib.dll : 1.5.12.24

sfFavorites.dll : 1.0.4.40

sfFavoritesShellExtension.dll : 1.0.1.5

sfTransferQueue.dll : 1.0.1.40

SmartHook.dll : 1.0.2.2

+- Language ---------------------------

SmartFTP.exe : 2.5.1008.40

+- Internet Explorer ------------------

Version : 8.0.6001.17184

+- Winsock ----------------------------

Winsock : 2.2
The improved experience with carrying forward my UI preferences is very welcome. Thanks!

>Still created a shortcut on my desktop which I didn't ask for or have any way to prevent.
A lot of users were not able to find out how to start SmartFTP after the installation. That's why there is a shortcut on the desktop. You can easily delete the shortcut.

>I still have a folder at C:\Program Files\SmartFTP Client 2.5 Setup Files\SmartFTP Client 2.5 Setup Files. No other program seems to require 2 folders in the Program Files area.
>Installer still uses an old-fashioned, Windows 95 style icon. I have a SFTPNSI.exe in that folder which has a modern, Windows XP style icon.
These are unimportant things. Why should we use a 100kb fancy icon for the installer?
