Cannot open, edit or view files - sfFTPShellExtension Unknown Error

Post by rolij » Sat May 10, 2008 8:31 am

Just updated to the latest version.
Since then I can't open edit or view files anymore.
All I get is a error window:

sfFTPShellExtension
Unbekannter Fehler

SmartFTP v3.0.1015.5
on Windows Vista SP1

Do you use the German translation? If yes try the English translation.

If this doesn't help install the latest version from
https://www.smartftp.com/download

Please install the latest version from:
https://www.smartftp.com/download

Then create a crash dump as described in this article:
https://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/how- ... f2594.html

Instead of using the -crash switch in the command line use -hang.
32-bit:
cscript "%ProgramFiles%\Debugging Tools for Windows\adplus.vbs" -hang -pn SmartFTP.exe -o C:\Dump

Run this command right after you see the error. If you need further instructions please let us know.

Thank you
Regards,
Mat

having same problem.
i have Vista Ultimate

had 2.0 installed. then downloaded new version after it wouldnt open as i installed service pack 1 for vista.
tried removing 2.0 completely, removing the files from the appdata folder, restarted machine, installed new version and still same issue.

created all connections again to test. still same error.

here is my dump file.

http://rapidshare.com/files/114739189/P ... 4.rar.html

oh, the command for the debugger is also wrong for vista x86.
you put
cscript "%ProgramFiles%\Debugging Tools for Windows\adplus.vbs" -hang -pn SmartFTP.exe -o C:\Dump
it needs to be for default install
cscript "%ProgramFiles%\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\adplus.vbs" -hang -pn SmartFTP.exe -o C:\Dump

thanks

Just downloaded the latest version. I use original english version, no translations.

Still same problem.
Just recognized that I can't upload or download any file.
So in other words: SmartFTP is completely not working for me since I had to update to version 3.

OK,

HERE IS THE FIX
DO EVERYTHING carefully.

it took me hours of mucking around to find the solutions but now all is working beautifully.
---------------------------------------------
all this was found between two articles: plus loads of emails with Mat at support
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/ ... 39820.aspx
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... 05489.html
---------------------------------------------
---------------FIRST-----------------------
Download the SubInACL tool
and install it. By default it will install to c:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools

Grab the following file fromhere
Run the file AFTER installing the subinACL tool
or if you would rather manually create the file you can... see below

Go to the Start menu, choose Run, type cmd and click OK

Type notepad reset.cmd and click yes to create a new file named reset.cmd
Copy and paste the following contents into reset.cmd and then save and close it.
OR

cd /d "%programfiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

Run the reset.cmd file just created or downloaded.
This tool will take several minutes to run - be patient - took me 5 minutes i think it was.

Next restart the machine.

You will notice a whole lot of programs and windows services that dont want to start properly. network icons and network listings will be down etc.
Dont worry they will revert after the next step
------------------------
---------- Step 2 ---------
next do the following (copied from the second link i gave at the start)

>>Right click "Computer"
>>Click "Manage"
>>Under the "System Tools" section, Double click "Local Users and Groups"
>>Click "Groups"
>>Right click "Administrators"
>>Click "Add to group..."
>>Click "Add"
>>Click "Advanced"
>>Click "Find Now"
>>Double click "Local Service"
>>Click "Ok"
>>Repeat to add "Network Service"
>>Click "OK"
>>"NT Authority\Local Service" and "NT Authority\Network Service" should show up in the list now
>>Click "OK"
>>Close Computer Management and reboot.
--------------------------------------------------------
Done.
just for safe measure, re-install smartftp and restart again.
you will now have complete functionality of vista, plus some other issue to do with vista and service pack 1 will be gone... or atleast they were for me.
i had problem with windows update service pausing my computer every 10-15 seconds... seems to have fixed that as well.

Sweet... good to get that sorted.... now can ftp finally.

have fun.
