Hello,

I am using SmartFTP. On our University, we can access the Novell network via FTP. To change to the right Server I have to enter the directory \\servername. In Version 2.5 everything works fine, SmartFTP sends the command cwd \\servername. But in version 3.0 Smartftp sends the Command cwd /\\servername. The server can not be found because of the /. In my case smartFTP ist unusable. :-(
Please help me and fix this "bug"!

Edit: Even if I use \\servername as path in the favorites-properties, SmartFtp adds the / to the cwd command.

Hello mb,

I tried both way. Entering the path manually works fine in version 2, but not in version 3. The same problem with the favorites.
Path ist set to \\fh-kroesus\DATA1\kurs, in version 2 this also workes fine...

According to the Novell documentation you can use replace all \ with /.
//fh-kroesus/DATA1/kurs

URL:
http://www.novell.co...tk.html#a2fbytk

3.2.3 Accessing a Remote Server

To navigate to remote servers, use the following format:

cd //remote server name/volume/directory pathname
File operations such as get, put, and delete can be used on the remote server, even without changing directory path to that server. For example:

get //remote_server_name/volume/directory path/filename
The double slash (//) indicates that the user wants to access a remote server. After the double slash, the first entry must be the name of the remote server.

Thank you for your help.

I tried //fh-kroesus/DATA1/kurs but Smartftp only sends one /

[19:44:36] CWD /fh-kroesus\DATA1\kurs
[19:44:36] 550 Invalid Path

Hello mb!

Connecting to fh-kroesus is working fine. I see the directories and files. But I can't download any files.
On double click to the File in the transfer queue I get the following message:

[21:28:27] Resolving host name "XXX"

[21:28:31] CWD /DATA1/kurs/Her/Standardsoftware/Vorlesung
[21:28:32] 550 Invalid Path

/DATA1/kurs/Her/Standardsoftware/Vorlesung ist the path on fh-kroesus where the file which I want to download ist located.
It looks like the downloader forgot to change to the fh-kroesus server?

Hello ..

Well the whole design with the remote server in path is very bad. The server should at least return the //remote server part in the PWD command. If the remote server is not part of the path how is the FTP client supposed to know on what remote server the files are located at?

You can manually edit the Transfer Queue items. To do this stop the transfer queue. Then right click on the item you want to edit and select Properties from the context menu. Then start the queue. This might work but once again since this path system is totally flawed you will always run into problems.

Mat

Well thanks to Mat at SmartFTP this issue has now been resolved, and I would just like to say that when I identified that this problem still existed, I got an extremely prompt response, and over the course of a number of emails back and forth, identifying my Logs of the activity, surrounding this issue Mat clearly knuckled down to solve it, in a polite, support and efficient manor. THANK YOU Mat.

As too the solution.

Well a new version of SmartFTP has been raised (which occurred the same day once the initial issue had been narrowed down!), which allows access to Novell server systems such as the one I am using (even if it is a bit old). As you are reading this you no doubt had the same issue. Well this note below is it (I hope) in a nutshell.

Basically the core server on the Novell FTP access point connect fine, (if you remember to set the connection type to ACTIVE), but the issue was that if you were to log in to the system but request a different server on the system, it did not switch over, from either when you were already logged in and wanted to switch to another server, or if you logged in directly requesting another server.

So the general connections go something like this.

ftp.yoursever.ac.uk

with the directory request, like

//users/myarea/filestore

This got me into my main files, however I also have a webserver so I needed to access another server within the same FTP. So
From the drop down menu: “commands>custom commands>miscellaneous>change folder”

Typed in: “//newservername/”

And there we go… all working… new server connection on same FTP access port.

OK you can also now log in directly to the other server as well, and any level deeper in on the folder structure you need to go like:

HOST: ftp.yourserver.ac.uk
PATH: //differentServer/folder1/folder2/ ( …. Etc to were you want to go)

Which works just as well, so you can have 2 favourites set up depending on the server you want to access, rather than switch between them once you have logged in.

Well I hope this makes some sense to those that have had this issue. And remember a good recommendation for a support service for a piece of software goes along way and this ones gets mine… it was refreshing. Thanks again SmartFTP and Mat.
