Character conversion failed

Problem

Character conversion failed.

HRESULT error: FTPLIB_E_CHARACTERCONVERSION (0x80043151)

Cause

The client received an incorrect character encoding from the server. This can happen if the client expects UTF-8 encoding but the server uses a different encoding (code page).

Solution

  1. Go to the Favorite Properties
  2. For FTP connections: Go to the FTP property page
For SFTP connections: Go to the SSH - SFTP property page
  3. Set the Code page to the correct code page the server uses or use "Current Windows ANSI Code Page"
For example, if the server uses a Latin derived language from Western Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, etc), set the Code page to 28591 (ISO 8859-1 Latin I)
  4. Restart SmartFTP
