Slow Directory Listing on Windows XP

Problem

The display of folders with many items (10'000 or more) is very slow on Windows XP. Also when the folder is refreshed due to an update notification from the transfer queue, SmartFTP is not responding for some time.

Cause

Folders with a large number of items are not handled efficiently on legacy operating systems as Windows XP. This is due to fact that SmartFTP implements many workarounds for features and functions that are not present in Windows XP.

Solution

The recommended solution is to upgrade your operating system to Windows 7 or newer. If that is not an option try the following:

  • Divide the huge folder into subfolders if you can
  • Install Windows Search for Windows XP
  • Close the Remote Browser while transfers are in progress
