Logging into a ftp on a home network

I have a 802.11b wireless network setup with 3 client machines and an ftp on one of them. I gave my IP number to a friend outside my network but he could not login to my ftp. I couldn't even see him attempt to connect. Should I switch out of PASV mode? Or do I need to fool around with my IP mask?

How can this be fixed so someone on the outside can login?

thanks,

Chip

It will depend on how your home network is set up. If you are using a router then you will need to set up port forwarding on the router. Your friend will also need to attempt to connect using your external ip address (the one provided by your ISP) and not your lan ip address. To set up the port forwarding you will need to forwarded all requests coming in to your external ip on port 21 (default ftp port) to your internal lan ip. If you want to enable passive connections, you will need to for your ftp software to broadcast your external ip address for passive connections and also set up a forwarded port on the router for that also.
